Fishing

All categories of saltwater fishing are easily catered for including:

  • Straylining (our specialty)
  • Stand up game fishing
  • Saltwater fly
  • High speed jigging
  • Hapuka
  • Bottom fishing

The decks of the Whai allow ample space for the whole crew to be fishing at once.  Salt, ice and bait can be supplied and ample freezer space allows your catch  to be kept at its best.

Since 2002 John holds the Mercury Bay Game Fishing Club all class record for the  heaviest snapper at 14.1kg.

 

Diving

Cuvier, the Mercury Island Group, and  Great Barrier Islands offer many diving opportunities no matter what the conditions.

Scallop diving in the Coromandel has been suspended until 2023. This is a move that we fully support. Crayfish are in all year round plentiful supply. We can also offer outstanding scenic dives, night dives, drift dives and spear fishing as requested.

The M.V. Whai has for your convenience:

A high speed 4 stage compressor for quick, clean fills at no extra cost. Ample dive gear storage and a large area to gear up. Large deck areas and stable laddering make the disembarking and retrieval of divers easy. A dinghy is available for extra assurance for large groups 

 

Cruising

The M.V. Whai has ample space to cater for family holiday trips, work social clubs or friends just wanting to unwind, relax or socialize. 

Apart from fishing and diving, swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and walking trips can be arranged.

The Boat
The M. V. Whai is a 48ft catamaran with Twin Cummings engines. The boat is subject to full marine survey and runs to a safe ship management program.Sleeping quarters on single or twin bunks cater for 10-16 persons or we are surveyed for 24 persons on day trips. The boat has a conventional household toilet and shower.  The Galley includes a kitchen sized stove/oven and large fridge and freezer units. 240V is available and there is a barbecue onboard. 'A floating holiday batch.' We have a 3.6mtre aluminum runabout, kayaks (on request) and a dive compressor available to clients.

The Owner/Skipper 

John Ellwood took over the family business from his parents Mick and Dulcie. Mick was only the 2nd owner of the boat and ran the boat for 25+ years. John has been the sole skipper since. John has grown up in Whitianga, learning to fish and dive in the local waters. He has extensive experience and contacts in the local boating, fishing and diving scene. He has worked on other charter boats and commercially on wetfish, gamefish, crayfish and scallop boats locally and around the South Pacific. John is a gold star fireman and is a life member of Whitianga coastguard after serving many years as crew and on the committee.

The Whai has completed many successful trips to Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu and New Caledonia. The Whai was taken by its previous owner to Japan.

We follow the Pest Free Warrant requirements
set out by DOC and Auckland Council,
therefore we ask all passengers
to ensure their gear is pest free prior to arrival.
